A majestic city church in the heart of Jönköping
Save
Sofiakyrkan in central Jönköping, with its grand spire, is the tallest building in the municipality. The church is a place for everyone, where you can light a candle or take a break from the city's hustle and bustle. Open your senses and experience this beautiful Neo-Gothic church in person!
In the late 19th century, there was a need for a large church on the west side of Jönköping, as more people were moving to that part of the city. The task of designing Sofiakyrkan was given to architect and professor Gustaf Dahl, who also designed the Royal Library in Stockholm.
Sofiakyrkan was named after Queen Sofia, wife of King Oscar II. Construction began in 1885 in the Neo-Gothic style, emphasizing light, air, and space. The design of the windows, doors, and tower evokes a sense of ascent. In 1888, Bishop Johan Andersson consecrated the new church on the site of the former Västra Market Square.
Sofiakyrkan is the largest church building in the diocese. At 71 meters, it is also the tallest building in the municipality, followed by the Quality Hotel Match (64 meters) and Munksjötornet (62 meters).
The church, with space for over a thousand visitors, is a popular venue for weddings, christenings, funerals, and concerts.
