Experience an island full of adventure and history
According to legend, the island of Visingsö was created when the Giant Vist threw a tuft of grass into lake Vättern so that his old woman would have something to step on. Just like a thousand years ago, the tuft is still teeming with life today! Here you can enjoy historical remains, beautiful nature, farm shops, art, child-friendly activities and much more!
One of the best ways to experience Visingsö is from the saddle. Rent a bike at the harbor and with a map in hand you can discover the beautiful island close to nature! Pick up a lunch basket at the fishmonger's and cycle south. Speed through the oak forest and stop at one of the cozy farm shops.
Continue down to the castle ruins in Näs to have the lunch provided and enjoy the view and the historical environment. Pedal further north and check into some accommodation, on the island there is everything from private rooms to hotels. Wake up refreshed and continue your journey on the island after breakfast. Maybe you want to climb the tower of Kumlaby church, visit Tempelgården or take a dip in the refreshing Vättern!
Gränna and Visingsö have a long history together. Visingsborg Castle on Visingsö was once the heart of the large Brahe family's county. With two castles on the mainland, Brahehus, and Västanå and Visingsborg on Visingsö, the three castles formed a triangle, and in the middle of it, in 1652, he created the town of Brahe-Grenna, which we know today as Gränna.
At the end of the 17th century, the Swedish counts lost their estates to the crown, which marked the end of an era. But even today, traces of the county remain – with a rich history and beautiful landscapes.
Experience Visingsö on the charming and popular Visingsö train. The train takes you on a journey of discovery in the southern part of the island where you pass sights and exciting historical landmarks with the train driver as your guide. The tour passes, among other things, the oak forest that was planted as early as the 1830s to secure the navy's need for material for its ships.
On Visingsö you can also take a tour with remmalag, the island's popular horse-drawn carriages that have been transporting visitors around the beautiful island for over 100 years. The journey is at a leisurely pace and you can enjoy both the scents and the natural experiences.
Sit back on the saddle and enjoy the sound of hooves clapping and the scents of Visingsö. The journey is at a leisurely pace and the driver guides you along the way. From the harbor, you can take a ride of just over an hour that takes you through the oak forest up to Kumlaby Church. You will pass, among other things, the Visingsborg castle ruins, Brahe Church, the island's "center" and an Iron Age burial ground.
If you want to do something together as a family, it can be fun to challenge each other at adventure minigolf. It's hard to miss that the playground's minigolf course is inspired by the island, as you can play golf through both Brahekyrka and Kumlaby Church. If any of the children in the family have extra legs, they can jump on the bouncy castle that looks like the ferry Braheborg.
Taking the kids over to Visingsö is usually a popular excursion. In the harbor area, you will find bike rentals and a children's playground. There are rides and other fun things to do for children aged 3–10.
A picnic is usually appreciated by both children and adults and on Visingsö you have many lovely places for this. How about a break for a packed lunch at one of the island's ruins or down at Näs bathing area. Speaking of swimming, there is a temperate outdoor pool in Kumlaby perfect for families with children.
What better way to spend your time on a historic island than a treasure hunt? You can choose between two tours - the northern tour or the southern tour. You will pass five stops where you will be given five clues, and once you have figured out the clue you can open the treasure chest in the harbor.
Visingsötåget - the tourist train
