City-close lake with rich wildlife

Discover Rocksjöns naturreservat near Jönköping's city center. Here you can explore the biodiversity, see protected bird species, and walk on boardwalks through reed beds and along the lake.

Spending a few hours at Rocksjöns naturreservat creates many wonderful memories. Here you can experience rich birdlife up close with over 50 different bird species. The area is a biological "hot spot," a place with a great variety of both animals and plants.

Rent a kayak from the kayak station at Hasse på Sjökanten and experience the reserve from the water. Due to the rich birdlife, it is not always allowed to paddle on the entire lake, so check the regulations before you set off.

Walk around the lake

Another pleasant experience is to walk in the area and around the lake. Follow the boardwalks that lead you through reed beds, over bridges, and continue along paths and walkways. Wildlife is constantly present, and nature offers great variety. At Rocksjöbadet, you can take a refreshing dip from the pier or play volleyball at one of the two volleyball nets.

Nature and sports coexist around the lake

On the western side of the lake, there is a tower you can climb, which is also accessible on the first floor. Here you can look for rare birds and watch canoe races held on the lake. Canoeing activities mainly take place during the warmer months of the year. Larger running events such as Vårruset are also organized around the lake.

The name Rocksjön

The "Rock" in Rocksjön can be traced to the village of Rockö, which once lay between Rocksjön and lake Vättern. The village was destroyed in the late 1400s, but the name still lives on. The lake was called Röcksjö in 1615, and other older maps show names such as Råkasjön, Råksjön, and Råckesjön. Rocksjön has also been called Ladugårdssjön, after the royal farm located east of the lake, now Ryhov.
