Meet the people who create locally produced craftsmanship with lots of love. In the heart of Gränna, Polkapojkarna's confectioners bake Genuine Gränna Polkagrisar according to Amalia Erikson's original recipe.
Along the main street in Gränna, since 1997, Polkapojkarna has been making the classic red and white striped peppermint sticks and many other peppermint rock candy flavours. They also produce caramels, cream toffee, and fudge.
Here, you will always meet a cheerful confectioner who is happy to show how the production works and offer freshly baked polkagrisar. You, your friends, and colleagues can book a place to try baking your own polkagrisar.
Fredric and Daniel Agnhammar, the two brothers who run Polkapojkarna, were young boys with a great interest in candy and confectionery craftsmanship. In 1994, they opened a small factory in a basement on a back street in Gränna. Even then, their goal was to become the most genuine peppermint rock candy factory in the village.
To make ends meet, Fredric and Daniel had other jobs on the side, but today the business is thriving, and the brothers have expanded with a peppermint rock candy factory in Stockholm.
The production of polkagrisar started in 1859 by the then-poor widow Amalia Erikson, who later became a successful entrepreneur. The then very popular polka dance gave the name to the polkagris, which became Gränna's main hallmark and one of Sweden's most popular souvenirs.
The original recipe for the classic red and white peppermint rock candy External link, opens in new window. consists of sugar, water, glucose syrup, vinegar, peppermint oil, and red food colouring.
In 2022, Gränna polkagrisar received the EU designation PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which means that only polkagrisar made in Gränna can be called "Genuine Gränna Polkagrisar."
A couple of days in Gränna holds everything you could wish for during your holiday. Stunningly clear water, breathtaking views, gentle walks in magical forests, history, cycling along beautiful country roads or challenging MTB tracks, relaxing to magical sunsets, strolls down cobblestone alleys, deliciously good ice cream and of course – the pepparmint rock candy.
