Gilberts bakery, located in Ekhagen, serves a variety of pastries, cakes, and cookies. There’s something for everyone here - including Jönköping’s best semla (Swedish eclair).
Situated on Ekhagsringen, right at the entrance to Jönköping if you’re coming from Highway 40 from the east, Gilberts is a beloved café known for its wide selection of baked goods, including delightful sandwich cakes and freshly baked bread.
The café offers all the classic pastries you could hope for, along with exciting new flavours. How about trying a banana semla or a cinnamon bun biscuit? Speaking of biscuits, they offer as many as 12 different flavours.
In addition to a cozy indoor seating area, there are several tables and chairs outside during the summer.
Jönköping’s best semla
Ahead of Shrove Tuesday in 2024, the local newspaper Jönköpings-Posten held a competition to find Jönköping’s best semla, the Swedish eclair. Residents voted, and the winner was Gilberts. In previous years, the same newspaper conducted their own taste tests and also declared Gilberts’ semla the very best.
In addition to the classic semla - which is officially Jönköping’s finest - they offer several variations, such as licorice semla, banana semla, and semla biscuit.
