Along Brahegatan in Gränna, you'll find Almas polkagriskokeri – a charming shop and candy cane factory offering everything from the classic polkagris to new taste experiences.
At Almas polkagriskokeri, you get a front-row seat to the peppermint rock candy production process. Through the large glass windows, you can look into the factory and watch the skilled artisans carefully twist and shape each polkagris by hand.
Almas polkagriskokeri offers visitors the opportunity to try baking peppermint rock candy themselves. This activity is perfect for hen parties, stag parties, birthday celebrations, or companies looking for a unique and fun team-building experience.
The activity begins with an introduction to the history of the peppermint rock candy and what makes it so special. Then, participants are welcomed into the factory, where the bakers provide a thorough overview of the entire process.
After the overview, it's time for participants to try kneading and shaping their own peppermint rock candy. Of course, everyone gets to take home their creations, making the experience both memorable and tasty.
Peppermint rock candy production started in 1859 by the then poor widow Amalia Erikson, who later became a successful entrepreneur. The then very popular polka dance gave the name to the polkagris, which became Gränna's main hallmark and one of Sweden's most popular souvenirs.
The original recipe for the classic red and white peppermint rock candy consists of sugar, water, glucose syrup, vinegar, peppermint oil, and red food colouring. (https://jkpg.com/sv/granna-visingso/recept-pa-polkagrisar/)
In 2022, Gränna candy canes received the EU designation PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which means that only candy canes made in Gränna can be called "Genuine Gränna Candy Canes."
A couple of days in Gränna holds everything you could wish for during your holiday. Stunningly clear water, breathtaking views, gentle walks in magical forests, history, cycling along beautiful country roads or challenging MTB tracks, relaxing to magical sunsets, strolls down cobblestone alleys, deliciously good ice cream and of course – the pepparmint rock candy.
