Unique buildings and a sizzling match industry

The Matchstick Area is unique in Sweden and is today the only completely preserved historical environment of industrial buildings from the matchstick industry. The Matchstick Museum is located on the southern shore of Lake Vättern in a beautiful wooden building dating from 1848. Here you will meet both the people and the machines that built up the matchstick industry and developed it into a global company. In the 1970s, matchstick manufacturing in Jönköping closed down and Jönköping municipality took over the area to transform it into the cultural centre it is today.

  • Car parking: The area is car-free. Opposite the Culture House (Kulturhuset) in the Matchstick Area there is a small car park with about 20 spaces. On the other side of Västra Storgatan, about 50 metres away, there is the June car park, where there are usually plenty of spaces.
  • Bus parking: The nearest bus parking space is at Hamnparken, about 400 metres from the museum along Järnvägsgatan.
  • On foot: From Jönköping’s travel centre you can walk to the Matchstick Area. The distance is a few hundred metres.

The Matchstick Area is located in the western part of central Jönköping with walking distance to Jönköping’s main travel centre.
