Idyllic paddling through three lakes in the magical Bauer landscape
Save
Enjoy a peaceful and scenic paddling experience in the Bauer landscape, exploring the lakes Bunn, Ören, and Kvarnasjöarna by canoe or kayak. The area features mystical waterways, lush landscapes, numerous islands to explore, and excellent swimming spots.
Bring your friends, family, or go solo. You can choose to paddle in the calm waters independently or with a guide.
As you glide through the water, imagine how artist John Bauer found inspiration for his famous paintings and fairy tale trolls in this very setting.
This vast water system connects several lakes waiting to be discovered. The main lakes include northern, central, and southern Bunn, Ören, and the smaller Kvarnasjöarna, all linked by lush, tree-lined channels.
You can rent a kayak from Bauer Activities, where a car with kayak trailers will pick you up from Bauergården in Bunn and drop you off at a small beach in northern Bunn.
Canoes are also available for rent at Bauergården in Bunn, located by southern Bunn, while kayaks can be rented from Smålandsgården in Örserum, situated by northern Ören.
Both Bauergården and Smålandsgården offer lunch and after-work dining options.
The northern part of Bunn features several mystical islands, including Nilsön, a popular swimming spot where you can sunbathe and dive from the cliffs.
Here, you'll also find John Bauer’s Björkudden, where he and his wife Ester once lived before they tragically perished in Lake Vättern.
From northern Bunn, you can paddle through a narrow, mysterious channel into northern Kvarnasjön - a hidden gem for those seeking a quiet and enchanting route.
Starting from Bauergården, you can head straight into southern Bunn, where the waters are more open.
From southern Bunn, a 3 km long scenic channel leads to Lake Ören. A grill spot at the Björkenäs nature reserve on Ören’s eastern shore is a popular stop before paddling back.
For those looking for an overnight stay, camping is allowed in designated areas within Björkenäs nature reserve. Other nearby islands also permit camping.
From Smålandsgården, you can paddle directly into northern Ören. If you want to reach the channel leading into southern Ören, the journey is about 8 km, but the scenic beauty makes it worthwhile.
Although the waters are more open, the shoreline remains close on both sides.
A great place for a break is Björkenäs or one of the smaller islands in southern Ören, ideal for a swim or a barbecue.
Bauergården offers a restaurant, campervan parking, and hotel accommodation. Here, you can rent canoes and pre-order a picnic basket to take on your paddling trip. Afterward, unwind with a sauna session to complete your adventure.
Smålandsgården provides hotel accommodation, a restaurant, and kayak rentals, along with the option to order a picnic basket for your journey.
