A historic pilgrimage route with several attractions
Save
The Norra S:t Sigfridsleden is a pilgrimage route that offers a fascinating journey through historical landscapes, rich in culture and scenic views. With a total length of 20.4 kilometers, it features varied nature, exciting attractions, and a deep sense of history.
Whether you prefer a shorter trip or a long hike through the scenic areas of Småland, the Norra S:t Sigfridsleden offers a unique experience. Here, history, culture, and spirituality meet in an inspiring experience. The trail, maintained by the Church of Sweden, stretches from Fiskebäcks Chapel in Habo Municipality to Sofiakyrkan in the heart of Jönköping.
The hike begins at Fiskebäcks Chapel in Habo, a historic site dating back to the 1780s. Here, you can get an initial glimpse into the rich history that characterizes the trail.
Just as you enter Jönköping Municipality, you pass Domsand, a wonderful almost tropical bathing spot, ideal for a refreshing dip in the summer. Nearby is Vidablick, a course center run by KFUM, complete with a barbecue area and rest facilities. The trail then winds along the shore of lake Vättern, where you can enjoy stunning views of the lake at several points. A perfect opportunity to stop and simply take in the beauty of nature.
The trail passes through Bankeryd's center and continues towards Attarpsdammen, a family-friendly spot with a heated outdoor pool. You then continue the hike to Banvaktstugan, the last remaining of its kind on the railway between Falköping and Nässjö, as well as Hembygdsgården and Bankeryd's Church.
From Bankeryd, the trail goes up to Labbarp and Himlabacken. Himlabacken offers a fantastic view and is an excellent spot for a coffee break.
Towards the end of the trail, you pass Torps Gård, dating back to the 1600s, and Björnebergs Manor. These places provide an exciting insight into the region's history. The trail ends at the majestic Sofiakyrkan in central Jönköping.
The Norra S:t Sigfridsleden is named after St. Sigfrid, a missionary from York who baptized Olof Skötkonung at Husaby Spring on Kinnekulle around the year 1000, an event considered the start of Sweden's Christianization.
The trail was inaugurated on May 2, 2021, by the bishops of Skara and Växjö, and it connects to other pilgrimage routes, including the S:t Franciskusleden in Jönköping and further north towards Trondheim in Norway. Here, you can walk in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims seeking penance, forgiveness, and spiritual guidance.
The right of public access (Allemansrätten) allows you to explore Sweden’s nature. This unique privilege is based on shared responsibility, requiring everyone to respect wildlife, nature, landowners, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Enjoy the outdoors - but know the rules!
