Meetingplace for culture

Kulturhuset in Jönköping has been run by the nonprofit association Kulturhuset for over 40 years. It’s a vibrant space filled with member associations, rehearsal rooms, Folkets Bio, Nyfiket café, and much more. The goal is to be a free meeting place for live culture.

Member associations and workshops

Nyfiket

Nyfiket, Kulturhuset’s café, is run by members on a volunteer basis. The café is housed in one of the brick buildings that were once part of the Jönköping Matchstick Factory. Its spacious interior is welcoming to everyone, featuring walls adorned with art exhibits and live performances.

Nyfiket invites everyone to enjoy a coffee, even if they can’t pay for it. With a warm and friendly atmosphere, visitors can sit alone, with friends, or join others and feel at home.

Every Tuesday, Folkköket serves soup, salad, and bread for 30 SEK. The stage is open for anyone who wishes to perform.

Outside, there’s a patio with benches, chairs, and tables where you can enjoy the unique matchstick district setting. The area is particularly stunning in May when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

Folkets Bio in Jönköping

At Folkets Bio, you can watch award-winning films, shorts, children’s films, and documentaries from around the world. Screenings occur three to four times a week, on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Flea market

Kulturhuset’s large indoor flea market has been a staple for decades. Typically held a few Saturdays a month from 9 am to 1 pm, make sure to confirm dates and book a table on their website: kulturhusetjonkoping.se External link.

Tändsticksområdet

Discover Tändsticksområdet – a unique historic area with preserved industrial buildings from the city’s matchstick era. Visit the Matchstick Museum to learn how this industry shaped Jönköping and grew into a global enterprise. Today, the area is a vibrant cultural hub, home to art, crafts, shops, restaurants, bars, a gaming center, and a cultural center featuring a cinema, café, live stages, music, dance, and theatre.

How to get here

Follow signs for Resecentrum/Matchstick District. There’s a small parking lot with about 20 spaces across from Kulturhuset. The Juneparking lot, 50 meters away, usually has plenty of space.
