Save
Up on a hill with a fantastic view of the city lies Jönköping City Park. Discover untouched nature, the unique Bird Museum, the city's largest playground, animal pastures, an open-air museum, women in history trails, football, mini golf and outdoor dances.
Jönköping City Park is more than 100 years old. Before it became a public park, the area in the western part of Jönköping was overgrown with bushes and mixed forest.
The city park has activities for all ages and different interests. If you like nature, playtime, culture, history or animals, head to this lovely oasis of beautiful, unspoilt nature. It is located high up, with a views for miles over Jönköping, Huskvarna and Sweden's deepest lake, Vättern.
Get ready for a full day out with the kids at the city's largest and most entertaining playground. Here the children can play for several hours. All around the park there are animal pastures where you can say hello all kinds of creatures – of both the cute and noble variety. There are alpacas, peacocks, goats, chickens, sheep, llamas, horses and fallow deer.
After playing, it's always a good idea to have a snack, ice cream or a cup of coffee. Near the playground there are tables, benches and a barbecue area where you can grill your food and then sit down to eat. If you want to buy something to eat and enjoy a fantastic view at the same time, then ‘Stugan’ offers coffee, lunch and an à la carte menu (https://jkpg.com/sv/jonkoping-huskvarna/stugan-i-stadsparken/). When you have got your energy back, you can challenge your family and friends to a game of mini golf. There is also a food kiosk at the 18-hole course.
With its amazing collection of beautiful birds, eggs and photographs, a visit to the Bird Museum is a must. There are 1,450 birds of 330 species, and 2,500 eggs from 281 bird species. Admission to the museum is always free.
Are you curious about how the people of Småland lived and worked long ago? Then you should visit the open-air museum, which belongs to Jönköping County Museum. In 1901, engineer Algot Friberg purchased Bäckaby's medieval wooden church and moved it to Jönköping's city park. Several older buildings were then moved to the park and today the open-air museum consists of, among other things, a 17th-century ridge-cabin, a soldier's cottage, a drawing mill, a parish storehouse and a belfry.
In 1996, ten special trails were inaugurated to honour ten famous women from Småland. The paths in Jönköping city park are dedicated to: Vera Nilsson, Adéle Wetterlind, Hanna Ouhterlony, Ulla Stenberg, Ellen Key, Emilia Broomé, Moster Persson, Christina Nilsson, Kata Dahlström and Elin Wägner. The ‘Småland Stone’ bears 65 names of famous men born in Småland and has been in the city park since 1907.
The classic Stadsparksvallen has a stunning setting in Jönköping's city park. The football stadium was inaugurated as early as 1902 and was also an athletics stadium until 1981. Nowadays, only football is played at ‘Vallen’, which is the home arena for the pride of Jönköping - J-södra IF.
Fröjden is a fine outdoor dance floor where you can dance throughout the spring, summer and part of the autumn.
An arboretum is a plantation of trees and shrubs created for scientific study. In the early 1900s, trees and shrubs were planted between the current Stadsparksvallen and Dunkehallavägen. Some of these, together with new trees and shrubs, have been labelled so that visitors can study the names and see where the plants come from.
Jönköping is one of Sweden’s oldest cities, beautifully located by the shores of three lakes. Discover magnificent nature, a long sandy beach right in the city, the fascinating history of the match industry, and the magical art of John Bauer! Stroll through charming alleys, visit museums and libraries, explore shops, dine at cosy restaurants, and stay at welcoming hotels. With a university that attracts students from all over the world, the city has a vibrant and international feel. Nature is always close—whether you’re into cycling, forest trails, or peaceful nature reserves.
Stadsparken is located high up on one of Jönköping's hills, a stone's throw from the city centre.
On foot
From Jönköping city centre, walk west past Tändsticksområdet, Talavidskolan and up the hill towards Dalvik. From here it is signposted to Jönköping city park (Stadsparken).
By car
If you are driving from Jönköping city centre, take Västra Storgatan towards Bankeryd, turn left towards Dalvik and after a few hundred metres there is a sign on the left saying ‘Stadsparken’. From here you will reach two car parks. There is also a car park on the other side of the park and you can get there via Åsenvägen.
When J-Södra's football matches are taking place, those who can walk 1km should primarily choose car parks at Skänkeberg, Bäckalyckan, Bymarken or Västra Torget. Ideally to leave spaces available in the city park carpark to those who need them the most.
Public transport
You can easily get to Jönköping City Park by bus. From central Jönköping, take line 2 towards Hisingsängen or line 11 towards Samset. From Huskvarna, take line 4 towards Vätterslund. The stop is called ‘Jönköping Stadsparken’.
