Traditional peppermint rock candy factory
Save
At Johans Polkagrisar in central Gränna, you can experience a traditional peppermint rock candy factory. The shop is open during the summer months and is filled with sweets and various types of peppermint rock candy. Here, you can also see the polkagrisar being made.
Johan and his family are passionate about the craft, and Johan's interest in hunting and wildlife conservation has given the shop's products a unique signature – the moose symbol.
At Johans Polkagrisar, you will find not only the classic peppermint rock candy but also a wide range of flavours – a total of 31 different varieties! Among the favourites are liquorice, blueberry, bubblegum, and the unique "Hunter's Stick" which combines anise, liquorice, and salmiak.
The range also includes a sugar-free selection made with isomalt for a gentler impact on blood sugar levels.
In addition to polkagrisar, Johans Polkagrisar offers a variety of other sweets. Here, you can buy marmalades, toffees, and even exclusive chocolate confections from Narr Chocolate in Ödeshög and Ryfors Konfektyr in Mullsjö.
The production of polkagrisar started in 1859 by the then-poor widow Amalia Erikson, who later became a successful entrepreneur. The then very popular polka dance gave the name to the polkagris, which became Gränna's main hallmark and one of Sweden's most popular souvenirs.
The original recipe for the classic red and white peppermint rock candy External link, opens in new window. consists of sugar, water, glucose syrup, vinegar, peppermint oil, and red food colouring.
In 2022, Gränna polkagrisar received the EU designation PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which means that only polkagrisar made in Gränna can be called "Genuine Gränna Polkagrisar."
A couple of days in Gränna holds everything you could wish for during your holiday. Stunningly clear water, breathtaking views, gentle walks in magical forests, history, cycling along beautiful country roads or challenging MTB tracks, relaxing to magical sunsets, strolls down cobblestone alleys, deliciously good ice cream and of course – the pepparmint rock candy.
