Discover the craftsmanship behind one of Sweden's most beloved sweets – the peppermint rock candy! At Franssons Polkagriskokeri in Gränna, there is a wide range of sweets, and here you can shop, taste, and bake polkagrisar.
Franssons Polkagriskokeri has been one of Gränna's many polkagris factories since 1967, when Alf Fransson opened the doors to this charming family business. Here, polkagrisar are baked using classic methods, and the shop is filled with cones, lollipops, and jars of handmade sweets.
Alf, known as the "Polkagris King," set records and shaped the place's history with his impressive creations, including the world's longest and heaviest peppermint rock candy. Today, the factory is run by Alf's son Peter and his daughter Linn, who together keep the craftsmanship and family tradition alive.
Franssons Polkagriskokeri is a perfect destination for bus groups and tour operators. The spacious shop offers something for everyone, and for groups, you can book both guided tours and pepparmint rock candy baking.
The large parking lot and accessible facilities – including disabled toilets and outdoor seating – make it easy for visitors to enjoy the place at their own pace.
For those who want to go behind the scenes, Franssons offers a unique chance to become a polkagris baker for a day. Under the guidance of an experienced baker, you get to shape your own polkagris, perfect for stag parties, hen parties, or a fun family activity.
Baking polkagrisar from scratch is an experience suitable for both adults and children – although it is recommended for children over 6 years old.
During the high season, bookings are limited, so make sure to contact Franssons in advance to book a spot!
The production of polkagrisar started in 1859 by the then-poor widow Amalia Erikson, who later became a successful entrepreneur. The then very popular polka dance gave the name to the polkagris, which became Gränna's main hallmark and one of Sweden's most popular souvenirs.
