History of the hotel

At the end of 1850, the then Jönköpings Hotell was built. It was an incredibly large investment in a city with only 7,000 inhabitants. The hotel is one of the country's oldest and most famous hotels outside the capital. When it opened in January 1860, the hotel was the country's largest. The reason for the enormous construction was Jönköping's strategic location as a railway and road junction and it now became an obvious overnight stop on the completed Södra Stambanan.

The hotel housed a number of functions from the beginning. On the ground floor there was a restaurant, a Swiss restaurant, a billiard room, an inn, bank premises and after a few years a swimming pool was added. The middle floor was mainly occupied by rooms for travellers and the top floor by party rooms, club rooms and a few more rooms. In the attic, then as now, the Freemasons had their premises, including the large order hall, Johannessalen.

In 1863, the party room was completed two flights of stairs up. It has since been Jönköping County's premier party venue. The hall became magnificent with sparkling crystal chandeliers with blazing gas flames, mirrored walls that gave the illusion of rooms behind it, and decorations that transported the visitor to a castle-like environment. Memorable magnificent balls and parties have been held here ever since.
