IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping is part of the international IRONMAN series and a popular triathlon competition that has been held in Jönköping for about 10 years.
In 2024, IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping was recognised as the number two IRONMAN 70.3 event in the world at the IRONMAN Athletes' Choice Awards. The judging covers all aspects of the race, including the courses, host venue and organisation.Race format and distancesThe race starts with a 1.9 km swim in Lake Munksjön, weather conditions in the lake can vary but are usually relatively calm. Competitors will enjoy a challenging but picturesque start to the race. After the swim, participants hop on their bikes to complete the 90.1 km bike course that takes them through beautiful countryside, sweeping views, and up and down the hilly roads of the municipality of Jönköping and Aneby. The final part of the race is a 21.1 km run that takes competitors through the city of Jönköping and along the lakeside waterfront. Runners get to experience both the city atmosphere and the stunning natural scenery around the lakes. There are usually a lot of spectators along the route, not least in Rådhusparken where the finishing line is celebrated with much pomp and circumstance. In total, the competitors cover a distance of a half IRONMAN, 70.3 miles, hence the name ‘IRONMAN 70.3’.European ChampionshipIn 2025 and 2026, Jönköping will also host the IRONMAN 70.3 European Championship. Under this new title, the event is taken to another level as some of the world's best professional triathletes will be lining up at the start line in Jönköping to compete for the title of European Champion. Athletes will also be competing for the title of European Champion in their respective age groups.4.18.4 and IRONKIDSIn addition to the big race, the IRONMAN weekend also includes a sprint distance - 4.18.4 Jönköping. Competitors can choose between competing individually, in teams or in relay teams. The numbers ‘4.18.4’ indicate the distances, i.e. a 400m swim, an 18km cycle and a 4km run. The event is open to everyone, from experienced athletes to beginners who want to try out the sport. A children's race, IRONKIDS, will also be held during the IRONMAN weekend, promising a great atmosphere and lots of fun for young participants.
