Join us on an exciting guided walk inside Taberg Mine. Discover the mountain’s unique history and the valuable ore that was once extracted here.
Discover the Uniqueness of Taberg Mine and Its 1,200-Million-Year History. It all began when a lump of ore was formed right here — a mineral known as Titanomagnetite Olivine. The iron content is just over 30%, but the quality is exceptionally high. Since the 1400s, ore has been mined from the mountain, and during World War II, the passageways you can see inside the mountain today were created. In the 1950s, mining was stopped due to the increased risk of collapse, and the entire operation was shut down.
Today, bats hibernate here during winter, and in summer, guided tours invite visitors to explore the history and stories of the mine.
From early May to the end of September, you can join a guided tour of the mine. In May, mid-June, and September, tours run on Saturdays, but after Midsummer they are available Tuesday to Sunday. Pre-booking is recommended. There are two different tours on offer — a short one and a longer, more challenging option.
The Short Tour
The short tour lasts about 1 hour. There is an entrance fee and you can pre-book your ticket. Children under the age of 6 enter for free in the company of an adult and do not need a ticket, but they must be able to walk on their own and wear a helmet. Parts of the short tour are wheelchair accessible.
The Long Tour
The long tour takes around 1.5 hours and is more demanding. The minimum age is 10 years, and everyone pays an entrance fee. A maximum of 20 people are allowed per tour. Note that the passageways are narrower here and you’ll descend a lit spiral staircase of about 20 meters. If this makes you uneasy, the short tour is recommended instead. Once you’ve entered the mountain on the long tour, there’s no turning back — you simply follow along!
And who knows — you might even catch a glimpse of the Mountain Lady during your visit. Just be careful not to disturb her too much!
Experience Sweden’s only bat museum, located at the entrance to Tabergsgruvan, the Mine in Taberg. Explore the fascinating world of bats during your visit to the mine.
Every year, hundreds of bats hibernate in Tabergsgruvan. Sweden is home to 19 different bat species, six of which spend the winter in Taberg’s tunnels. Adjacent to the mine is Sweden’s first and only Bat Center and Museum. The museum is open during the summer in connection with guided mine tours and is perfect for the whole family.
At the museum, you’ll learn about bats’ appearance, habitats, and diets. It’s a child-friendly venue offering fun bat-themed activities. Kids can try on bat costumes, crawl into a miniature version of Taberg Mine, listen to bat sounds, and meet Frans, the bat puppet.
After visiting the mine and museum, don’t miss the spectacular views from Tabergstoppen. You can hike up or drive to the top for breathtaking scenery, delicious shrimp sandwiches at the café, and even a round of mini-golf.
From November to April, Tabergsgruvan’s tunnels are filled with bats in hibernation. During summer, they relocate to walls and attics but can still be spotted at the start and end of the season during guided tours.
Månsarp, Taberg, Norrahammar, and Hovslätt together form the Tabergsådalen, the valley through which the Taberg River flows. Here, you'll breathe in Swedish industrial history and encounter breathtaking nature, entrepreneurship, and creativity. At the top of Taberg, 343 meters above sea level, you can enjoy an incredible view while savoring the famous shrimp sandwich. Discover scenic hiking trails, Norrahammar Museum, the Tabergsgruvan and Bruket in Norrahammar
