A bathing place steeped in history

Parola Malm became the first regular landing site for boat connections between Visingsö and Mellby Strand-Grenna on the mainland in 1783. Today, the ferry arrives a few kilometres south of Parola Malm.

A hidden gem on Visingsö

This scenic spot is located on the shores of Lake Vättern, northeast of Kumlaby Church, right in the middle of the island. A bathing jetty with a ladder extends into the crystal-clear waters of the lake, making it a perfect swimming spot.

Bring a picnic or something to grill, as the area has both barbecue facilities and benches. The Kumlaby village association maintains the site, including the toilet. They have also worked to restore the area to resemble its historical role as a boat landing site.

The best way to reach Parola Malm is by cycling, but it is also accessible by car.

About the name Parola Malm

The unusual name Parola Malm originates from Tavastehus, Finland, where King Gustav III fell from his horse and broke his arm. On July 17, 1783, at 4 AM, the king returned to the capital. To commemorate his return, Kumlaby’s landing site was named Parola Malm in celebration.

Visingsö’s early passenger ferries

During the Middle Ages, Visingsö had a system called "Kronorodden", which required farmers to transport officials, soldiers, and other travelers by boat as part of their duties.

To ease the burden on the farmers, the delivery boat was introduced in 1783, maintaining a regular ferry service to Gränna every Wednesday for the next 80 years, until 1863.

The initiative for this postal and passenger boat came from Professor Sven Peter Liljenroth, who personally funded its operation. The delivery boat had a crew of seven and handled both mail deliveries and general transportation.

Visingsö’s harbour and free travel for islanders

Certain passengers, including the governor, the bishop, government officials, students at the Trivial School, and Visingsö residents, traveled for free. Other passengers paid a fixed fare.

The new ferry service ensured that mail was now delivered weekly, regardless of weather conditions - a significant improvement, as islanders previously had to wait for other trips to the mainland to send and receive post.

Although Kronorodden still existed, its reduced role was welcomed by the farmers responsible for it.

On Visingsö’s eastern shore in Kumlaby, the Kronobåthuset served as the island’s primary landing site for centuries until 1863, when the old harbour, near Visingsborg Castle Ruins, became the new main harbor.

Professor Sven Peter Liljenroth urged the governor to keep Kumlaby as the landing site for the new delivery boat, as it was already the most natural docking location.

The harbour area originally consisted of two piers, which also functioned as wave breakers during rough weather.
