Experience part of Biosfärområde Östra Vätterbranterna with this varied hiking trail. Biosfärled Uppgränna is 4.1 km long, and here you hike along narrow paths, on boardwalks, and in hills.
Biosfärled Uppgränna is a varied and flexible hiking trail that you can adapt according to your wishes and needs. It is easy to divide the hike into shorter sections, and the experience varies depending on where you choose to hike.
The hiking trail is a loop with a possible detour down to lake Vättern and great opportunities to shorten and adapt the trail. The loop itself consists of three different parts: the northern, eastern, and western parts. On the eastern side are Byagården and Byaträffen, both managed by the Byalaget in Uppgränna. Here you will find parking, dry toilets, a rest area, and a barbecue area.
The western part of biosfärled Uppgränna is also known as the "Tourist Road" (Turistvägen). It is part of the old national road, which is brown-signed as a tourist road by the Swedish Transport Administration due to its beautiful views and vibrant countryside.
The northern part of the trail offers two options: through the Girabäcken nature reserve along the stream ravine or on a path over the field.
Walking along the stream ravine is a fantastic nature experience, with everything from narrow paths and boardwalks to hills. The beginning of the trail is relatively accessible, making it easy to walk about 200 meters along the stream in the ravine. After that, it becomes slightly more difficult to navigate, and this part is therefore classified as moderately difficult. The flora here is richly varied, with many different types of trees and herbs growing in the area. You can also see and hear many different bird species.
If you choose the path over the field instead, this part is classified as accessible, and you are treated to a fantastic view of the open landscape. Here you can see lake Vättern, Visingsö, Västergötland, the slopes, Brahehus, and much more. The land is private, but you are welcome to walk or cycle.
At the northeastern corner of the trail, you can choose to go down to lake Vättern on paths, stairs, and boardwalks. This part is also along Girabäcken and its ravine. Once at lake Vättern, you can sit on the rocky beach and enjoy the views.
In the northeast, there is also a parking lot with signs set up by the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) that tell about the flora and birdlife in the Girabäcken nature reserve. The signs also provide information about the sandstone quarry that existed here at the turn of the 19th/20th century.
A couple of days in Gränna holds everything you could wish for during your holiday. Stunningly clear water, breathtaking views, gentle walks in magical forests, history, cycling along beautiful country roads or challenging MTB tracks, relaxing to magical sunsets, strolls down cobblestone alleys, deliciously good ice cream and of course – the pepparmint rock candy.
By car
You can find parking either at Byagården on the western part of the trail or up in the northeastern corner of the trail. To get here, follow signs or GPS to Uppgränna. The address for the parking lot on the eastern side of the trail, at Byagården, is Uppgränna 18.
If you are coming from the south, drive through Gränna and then follow Ödeshögsvägen.
If you are coming from the north, take exit 105, Vida Vättern, from the E4 and then follow lake Vättern south.
