Hop cultivation in Röttle, south of Gränna.
Save
In 2013, a few enthusiasts in Röttle began planting hops, and by the summer of 2014, the hop garden was inaugurated. Today, beer is brewed here—IPA, lager, and low-alcohol beers, many with names connected to Röttle.
The beer is now distributed to around 15 retailers, and it's also available for order through Systembolaget.
Röttle Humlegård (hop garden) is run by its members and exists to foster social interest in brewing beer, as well as to support Röttle’s history and cultural heritage.
The garden has nearly 50 hop trellises with various hop varieties. These are sometimes replaced, as not all hops are suitable for all beer types. One of the varieties is “Röttle hops,” found south of the stream and possibly dating back to when a brewery once stood here.
Hops are perennial plants that return year after year. They cling to whatever they can and can grow up to nine meters tall. It is the flowers of the plant that are used in brewing.
The history of the village of Röttle dates back to the 13th century, but its golden era came in the 1600s when the Brahe family utilized the water power of the roaring Röttle River. Weapons, paper, and flour were produced here.
You can still experience flour being ground in the small village today.
In the 1800s, a brewery powered by water stood here, but it burned down in 1884. Today, only a hollow in the ground remains where the brewery once stood. If you're curious, the spot is marked along the Röttle Trail that follows the river.
You’re welcome to visit the hop garden—it's located on the opposite side of the road from the large parking lot in the center of Röttle village
