Creativity thrives in Tändsticksområdet, home to two dynamic artist associations —Konstnärsföreningen Dymlingen and The Jönköping Printmakers’ Association. Together, they run Svavel Artists’ House, a unique fusion of an exhibition space and a collective workshop.

Svavel aims to be more than just a venue for art; it is a vibrant meeting place where artists and art enthusiasts connect. Featuring artworks by members, invited artists, and exciting contributions from art students in the Jönköping region, Svavel serves as an inspiring hub for artistic exploration and engagement.

Exhibitions at Svavel

Svavel hosts around a dozen exhibitions per year, aiming to showcase a diverse range of techniques and provide opportunities for both local and external artists to exhibit their work. The gallery is open to visitors from Thursday to Sunday.

Events

Svavel also offers space for various art-related events, including lectures, study groups, studio tours, and workshops. Several weekend courses are arranged for those interested in learning printmaking techniques. Every first weekend in September, Södra Vätterbygden’s Art Tour takes place, and Svavel proudly participates.

Discover Tändsticksområdet – a unique historic area with preserved industrial buildings from the city’s matchstick era. Visit the Matchstick Museum to learn how this industry shaped Jönköping and grew into a global enterprise. Today, the area is a vibrant cultural hub, home to art, crafts, shops, restaurants, bars, a gaming center, and a cultural center featuring a cinema, café, live stages, music, dance, and theatre.

  • Car parking: The area is car-free. Opposite the Culture House (Kulturhuset) in the Matchstick Area there is a small car park with about 20 spaces. On the other side of Västra Storgatan, about 50 metres away, there is the June car park, where there are usually plenty of spaces.
  • Bus parking: The nearest bus parking space is at Hamnparken, about 400 metres from the museum along Järnvägsgatan.
  • On foot: From Jönköping’s travel centre you can walk to the Matchstick Area. The distance is a few hundred metres.

How to get here

The Matchstick Area is located in the western part of central Jönköping with walking distance to Jönköping’s main travel centre.
