Shops offering everything from handicrafts to second-hand finds

Within the lush courtyard, you’ll find a candle workshop, a ceramic artist, a café, and a clothing boutique specialising in handmade activewear. During the summer, Kontrasternas Vind, an art and photography exhibition, opens its doors to showcase the works of local artists.

The history of Hallska gården

The estate was built in 1834–35 on the foundations of a 17th-century building. The builder was Lieutenant Gabriel Hall, which is where the name Hallska originates. The main building was once part of a larger estate that included stables, a carriage house, and living quarters for the coachman.

For many years, it was one of the grandest buildings in town, even receiving royal visits on multiple occasions. King Karl XIV Johan stayed overnight here in 1835. The property has been legally protected as a historic building since 1990 and is owned by Jönköping Municipality.

John Bauer’s last evening at Hallska gården

On the evening of November 19, 1918, the Bauer family spent their final hours at Hallska Gården with their close friends Elna and Bengt Hedberg.

As they waited to board the steamboat Per Brahe to Stockholm, John Bauer, his wife Ester, and their son Putte played a game of "steamboat" with the children. As the weather worsened, John spoke with the ship’s captain, who assured him that there was no danger.

The following morning, wreckage was discovered near Hästholmen, revealing that the Per Brahe had sunk, and all passengers on board had perished.
