When summer arrives in Jönköping, few things beat a refreshing dip in one of our many lakes. Here, tranquil forest lakes sit side by side with shallow sandy beaches and heated outdoor pools — each with its own charm and character. Whether you’re looking for something family‑friendly, easy to reach or simply a peaceful spot for a quick morning swim, there’s a place that’s just right for you. Here are our favourite spots for sunny days, picnic blankets and cooling swims.
Just 15 minutes drive from the centre of Jönköping and hidden between offices and the airport, you will find Västersjön an oasis of Swedish countryside bliss. The beach here is a south facing golden stretch, perfect for catching the sun in any season. The lake has three major benefits: It is a great swim spot as the water warms up nicely, there is a track around the whole lake which means you can break up your day with a 3km stroll and for any aviation enthusiasts you might even get the chance to spot a plane landing. There is parking next to the beach, picnic benches and a bathroom available.
This might just be the perfect beach for families with small children. There is a large grass area, a beautiful pontoon and swimming area, a small playground with swings, plenty of parking, changing rooms and a toilet. A feature that is particularly helpful on hot summer days is that the surrounding trees offer plenty of shade from the sun. The lake is large and still and perfect for kayaks and SUPs.
This swimspot is particularly wonderful because it is served by the 28 bus making it one of the easiest beaches to reach from the city centre. Here you will find a pontoon with diving boards, a kiosk organised by the orienteering club and fresh bathrooms. There is also an outdoor gym and plenty of space to spread out your picnic blanket. The parking and bus stop are next to the beach so it is very convenient. This lake also has a beautiful walking trail which goes the whole way around making it a great place to visit even when the weather isn’t perfect for swimming. You can also hire canoes from the kiosk.
Near the centre of Bankeryd is this heated outdoor pool. The large grassy area next to the pool means you can easily pass a whole morning or afternoon there. The water is heated and the pool is large and there are often lanes marked out for swimming lengths. Check the timetable for opening times!
Oset beach is on the shore of Vättern in Huskvarna. Vättern’s water is famously cold but here at Oset, the water is shallow and the sand underneath the clear water warms up making it very pleasant for swimming in the warmer months. There is plenty of space to sit on the grass and a great holiday atmosphere at this popular beach. It is very easy to get here by bus, bike or on foot. There is also good parking and a kiosk for snacks.
