A family day out on the island of Visingsö is the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and easy-going exploration. In this guide, I’ll share how my family and I spent the day discovering some of Visingsö’s treats!
After taking the car on the ferry from Gränna (I recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment), we disembarked and immediately spotted the horses from Visingsö’s famous Remmalag tours - a great experience to start your day on the island!
The Remmalag horses are true icons of Visingsö! These magnificent horses take you on a gentle discovery tour of the island, pulling comfortable trailers behind them where you sit and take in the views. Along the way, your guide brings the island’s history to life with stories and local insights. Our tour included a nice cream stop and time to meet and admire the beautiful horses up close — which was a hit with both children and adults. Read more about and book your trip with remmalag.
Next up, we headed to the southern end of the island and spotted the signs for the island’s treasure hunt along the way.
I simply downloaded the guide from the jkpg website (you can also pick one up at the ferry terminal before you set off). We then followed the clues around the southern end of the island searching for the secret word. It’s a brilliant way to keep children engaged and curious, and the route leads you past many of Visingsö’s highlights. With separate routes for the north and south of the island, it’s easy to fill an entire day with discovery and fun.
As part of the treasure hunt, we visited Bengtsgården Minidjur.
This charming stop offers a delightful taste of island farm life. At Bengtsgården Minidjur, we were invited to meet the animals and learn about their daily routines and personalities. Informative signs and friendly staff make it easy for children to understand more about farming and animal care.
We then drove all the way up to the north of the island to the beach at Sandudden and enjoyed a long and lazy picnic on the beautiful sandy stretch while looking back across to the mainland. On the way back to the harbour, we really enjoyed nature watching at Erstad Kärr and the signs helped us identify all the different birds we could see across the nature reserve.
Finally, to end the day and while waiting for the ferry home, we wandered around the Visingsborgs Slottsruin and did one last paddle in the water feeling as though we had squeezed a whole holiday into just one day!
