A Beautifully Located, Nature-Close Farm for Cyclists and Hikers
Save
Mykinge Försöksgård is the place for anyone longing for nature and wanting to get closer to life in the ecosystem, with animal care, food cultivation and a landscape offering magnificent views over Lake Landsjön in Äppledalen.
The farm is beautifully situated on the slopes down toward Landsjön, in the area designated by UNESCO as the East Vättern Scarp Landscape Biosphere Reserve – a fantastic natural environment. Mykinge Försöksgård is also located in the valley locally known as Äppledalen, a mecca for apple orchards, cafés and shops that focus on sustainability. Nearby you’ll also find Uthuset, one of Sweden’s largest outdoor stores.
Mykinge Försöksgård focuses on sustainable food cultivation and animal husbandry, producing its own biochar, pruning fruit trees, permaculture and democracy. Take the opportunity to join a guided tour where you’ll hear about the way of life on the farm.
An organic breakfast is served here, with homemade bread, homegrown vegetables and homemade marmalade from the garden pantry – and of course fresh eggs from the hens. There is always a vegetarian meal available.
Breakfast is included, and dinner can be purchased upon request.
Two double rooms are available to book, and there is also the option to stay overnight in your own tent. The farm provides a shower and laundry facilities.
Mykinge Försöksgård is part of Pilgrim’s Welcome and has special offers for those with a pilgrim passport. The farm is beautifully located about three kilometres from Franciskusleden and can arrange pickup for hikers. The farm also grows vegetables that were present in Saint Birgitta’s time.
Mykinge Försöksgård is a legacy from the time when the Western Match Factory operated in Jönköping. The factory invested in research and development and therefore created Mykinge Försöksgård. Between 1941 and 1968, the farm hosted the Western Match Factory’s aspen and poplar plantations. Many of these plantings remain today as wild-growing woodland.
The buildings used for the research activities are also still standing, such as the greenhouses, the laboratory and the dining hall. The main house still has the guest rooms that once hosted researchers from near and far. You’ll also find a library with thousands of books on forest research.
North of Huskvarna, you’ll find Småland’s very own Tuscany – Äppledalen, the Apple Valley. Here, over 100,000 apple trees grow at Rudenstams and Vistakulle Fruit Orchards. This idyllic getaway is part of the East Vätterbranterna Biosphere Reserve and offers breathtaking views over Lake Landsjön and Lake Vättern, scenic orchards, nature reserves, local leather craftsmanship, interior design shops, charming countryside cafés, and farm stores. It’s the perfect complement to the buzz of the city.
