Below the ruins of Visingsborg Castle lies the historic old harbour. Here, you can moor your boat, take a refreshing swim or why not enjoy a barbecue with a beautiful view?
Planning to visit Visingsö by boat? You can moor your boat at the old harbour, located just next to the ruins of Visingsborg Castle. There are a total of seven guest berths available, five with mooring lines and two with mooring rings.
By the harbour, you will find a small, inviting sandy beach – perfect for a refreshing swim or a picnic. Adjacent to the beach, there is also a barbecue area where you can enjoy a meal with a beautiful view in a historic setting.
The old harbour on Visingsö has historical roots dating back to the 17th century. In this area, Count Per Brahe the Younger had the island’s first harbour built in 1642, adjacent to the lake gate of Visingsborg Castle. After a severe spring flood in 1661, the harbour was damaged, and during the repairs that began the following year, the piers were made both higher and stronger. A few years later, in the summer of 1664, the harbour was further developed with two towers at the ends of the piers, each housing a cannon.
When steamship traffic to the island began in 1862, the harbour needed to be modernised to accommodate larger vessels. Stone from the castle was used to extend and strengthen the piers. The old harbour continued to serve as the island’s main harbour until 1956, when a new harbour adapted for car traffic was completed south of the old one. Today, the old harbour is used as a marina and guest harbour.
